Parow Park COVID-19 loud hailing awareness drive

Keeping COVID-19 awareness and prevention top of mind as we move from a crisis to a chronic stress situation is key and the City continues to drive the message that residents must carry on masking up, washing hands and protecting their loved ones and community by keeping a healthy distance. Today, City directorates embarked on a COVID-19 loud hailing awareness initiative to emphasise key messages at the City’s Parow Park housing complex.

The City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Directorate in collaboration with City Health, Social Development, Safety and Security and Subcouncil 6 engaged the community in a COVID-19 safety loud hailing initiative at the Parow Park housing complex, including washing hands, masking up and practising social distancing.

‘We must remain committed to keeping the curve as flat as possible and protecting our communities through education and awareness and other interventions. One of the best ways to do this is to arm our residents with all the information to protect themselves and their loved ones,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.

Since May this year, the City has done loud hailing awareness initiatives in communities across the metro, where City officials engaged and encouraged some of our most vulnerable residents. Ward Councillor, Leonore van der Walt, and Subcouncil Chairperson, Councillor Mercia Kleinsmith, also attended.

‘Apart from the loud hailing messages, tens of thousands of sticky - and street pole posters have been distributed and direct community engagements have been focused on practical low to no-cost interventions such as how to make a tippy tappy for hand washing, how to use bleach and make one’s own bleach solution as a disinfectant and how residents can self-isolate in a crowded area when they might not have the privilege of space. Since we have entered into Level 2 of the national lockdown regulations and some members of the public may feel more relaxed, it remains important that we continue our fight against the COVID-19 virus and curbing the spread by wearing masks, keeping our distance and washing our hands,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi.
